Roman Shoes

One of the questions I wanted answering at the Roman Camp was 'What did the Romans do for shoes in wet weather?' and I got fascinated by the variety of Roman footwear. They had both indoor and outdoor shoes, some of them with sheepskin linings to keep feet warm. They used hobnails to stop outdoor boots and shoes slipping, and these could have different patterns depending on who you were - men were generally plain, women went for fancier patterns. Shoes were also made, then turned inside out, so that the stitching was on the outside to stop it rubbing your feet. There is more information here:
