King Charles Tower

King Charles Tower was formerly known as the Phoenix Tower, after the carving that appears above one of the doors. Legend says that the name change happened when King Charles I stood on the top of the tower and saw his army defeated at Rowton Moor. However, it is impossible to see Rowton Moor from the top of the tower. More probably he stood on the top of the Cathedral, from where you can see the Moor, but why let reality get in the way of a good legend?
