'38-42 Watergate Street is a remarkable medieval building and many of the original features can still be seen inside. However, very little is known about its history nor the families who lived there. It was obviously built for a leading merchant, at a time when Chester was a major port. In fact it may be the 'Mansion place' at the corner of Gerrard's Lane (now Crook Street), mentioned in the reign of Edward III. Like all early Row buildings, this house was built for maximum commercial advantage, with businesses in the undercrofts and in the shops at Row level.'
