Watergate

When Chester was a flourishing port in the Middle Ages, the River Dee flowed close to the Watergate, and all goods entering the city passed through this gate. After the Dee was canalised in the 1730's the new port was built further down river and the medieval Watergate was replaced by this arch in 1788.
