Thomas Brassey was born near Chester, and was educated in the city. He became the world's foremost builder of railways in the 19th century, and, whilst mostly building in Britain and France, also worked in Spain, Italy, Holland, Canada and the Crimea. The plaque below commemorating him is in Chester railway station, and you can read more about him here:
