Hugh Lupus

Hugh Lupus was the first Earl of Chester, and he established the Benedictine monastery that later became the Cathedral. During his lifetime he was nicknamed 'Hugh le Gros' (Hugh the Fat). His symbol was the wolf's head, but the memorial to him in the Cathedral shows him surrounded by talbot hunting dogs.
