Duttons is in Godstall Lane, and used to be a wine merchants. It turned into a wine bar and has gone from strength to strength, expanding into what used to be a tea and coffee merchant next door.  You can read more about them at www.duttonschester.co.uk

Apricots

The apricots on the tree in our garden are oh-so-very-nearly ripe, and the tree is really laden with fruit this year.

Pyramid Glass

There is a shop on St Werburgh St called Pyramid Glass, and they sell beautiful glassware, as you can see. They have a website at www.pyramid-glass.co.uk

Pillar Boxes

In England, pillar boxes have the insignia of the reigning monarch on them, and in Chester city centre we have examples of the last three - Victoria, George, and Elizabeth - the one with VR is now very rare.

Hawarden Farm Shop

Just outside Chester, in Hawarden (pronounced 'harden' with a slightly long a), there is a very good farm shop, where you can also pick your own fruit for jam-making etc.

The Red Lion

The Red Lion is the most common pub name in Britain, so Chester just has to have one. This one was built around 1600, and is in Northgate St (where once there were recorded 36 establishments selling ale). It had a brief flirtation a few years ago with being an Irish pub, but has now been bought and refurbished by Nicholsons, and seems to be looking up.

St Peter's - Inside

Although still a church, St Peter's has an active involvement in the daily life of the city, housing a cafe with computers. There is also a lighting board, where all of the light switches are named after the people who donated the money for them.
