Olympic Water Polo

Not exactly around Chester, but local lass Fiona McCann was competing in the Women's Water Polo at the Olympics. She now trains in Manchester, but originally began her career in Chester City Baths. Chester has a strong record for training young water polo players and Beth Bolton is now part of the under-16 England squad as well.

Cathedral Replacement Doors

The temporary replacement doors have been hung at the Cathedral, with promised peepholes so that you can see into the Cathedral interior. However, I tried to look through them and saw - nothing! They have been blocked off on the other side. A lack of attention to detail from someone, methinks.

Abbey Square

I was walking through Abbey Square the other day, and noticed that the end house was up for rent. It belongs to the Cathedral, and I had always supposed that it was occupied by clergy as a perk of the job. What a great place to live - right in the heart of the city, on a cobbled street, next to the city walls - very atmospheric. On further checking I realised it was only the ground floor flat, but still an enticing prospect. Stephen Mosley MP

Chester has had a long line of conservative M.P.s, but with the election of Tony Blair's government in 1997 we gained our first labour member, Christine Russell. She lost her seat in the last general election, and we now have Stephen Mosley, another in the long line of conservatives. He was out and about in the streets doing a surgery for his constituents the other day, although I have to say he didn't get many takers, most of the passers-by being tourists.

Tesco Back Door

I walked out into the street at the back of Tesco in the city centre, and whoa! was very surprised to find it all wrapped up. I suspect it is to do with the general refurbishment of Tesco, and eagerly await the outcome.

Masters Are You Mad?

Encouraged by the free lunchtime talk, we went along to a performance of Masters Are You Mad?, and I was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable it was. Picnickers lounged around, rugs were offered to anyone who looked cold, umbrellas were lent during a brief shower, actor's voices projected really well, and the acting was of an incredibly high standard all round.

Meet The Producers

The Open Air Theatre has a program of free lunchtime talks, and I went along to the first of these, where the Olivier Award-winning director Robin Norton Hale (left in the photo below) discussed her experience of staging Glyn Maxwell's brand new play 'Masters Are You Mad?', and very interesting and informative it was too. On Thursday of this week Alex Clifton (right in photo below), Artistic Director since 2010, will give a talk on the project and his journey through directing the popular Shakespearean comedy.
