Greenway Street

Greenway Street is in Handbridge, and leads down to the river Dee. Traditionally all the houses were fishermens cottages, and this area was home to the long gone salmon fishing industry, although there are still one or two fishermen about, and I have eaten salmon caught here.

Ye Olde Edgar

A few doors down from the Bear & Billet are these two former town houses which were once joined together as an inn. Ye Olde Edgar is actually much older than the Bear and Billet, dating from c1570, and one of the best examples of late Tudor building in Chester. The name commemorates the tradition that in AD 973, the Saxon King Edgar was rowed down the river Dee by eight tributory Celtic kings, in token of their submission to him. The inn name survives, although the building has been converted back to two dwellings. Gyles Brandreth used to live here when he was the M.P. for Chester.

Parking Spaces

City centre parking spaces are at a distinct premium in Chester, especially within the city walls. Last time I checked cost of spaces was about 100 pounds per month, or more, so by my calculations the piece of land in the photo brings in over eight thousand a year for its' owners. Not bad for something so low maintenance!

Pied Bull Microbrewery

Yesterday I went on a guided tour of the Pied Bull Microbrewery, the only brewery within Chester city walls. It was very informative and educational, and the beer sampling at the end was good too! You can see more about them here: http://piedbull.co.uk/index.php?nav=brewery

Drill Hall

The Drill Hall on Albion St was built in 1868 as a training hall for the Royal Garrison Artillery and the Cheshire Rifle Volunteers. The cost of £2500 was raised by public subscription. The Drill hall was demolished in 1983, but the facade has been retained. Below are photos of the front and back.

Mysterious Porthole

If you stand outside the Grosvenor Hotel and look up, towards the Eastgate, you can see a porthole in the side of a building. The building was once an inn, and legend has it that it was put there by a sea captain to remind himself of his days at sea.

The Albion

The Albion Pub is locally renowned for having a landlord who is a law unto himself, and who runs his pub to please himself, rather than the general public. Despite this, it is extremely popular with regulars. I'll let his signage speak for itself.
